Newbie Like a Sponge - Need Wetting

I am a long time Directv Tivo user and just added a third to my house. I didn't read closely and found out the hard way that Directv no longer supplies Tivo units but instead supplies Tivo wanna-be units called the R15. Long story short, after a civil conversation with my Directv support, they sent me a R10. Not what I really wanted, but it is a Tivo unit.

I have a few questions.

First off, on my R10, I am missing the channel logos. Really not a big deal but nice to have. I also see by other posts that the R10 is a different breed of cat and needs prom changes to be "hacked".

Now, since the realization that the Directv Tivos are going away, I bought a backup Samsung SIR-S4080R on eBay. Manufactured date is April 2005, but I am still waiting for the unit to arrive here. I would like to possibly add a bigger drive which means I need an image so that is the first order of business. I would also like to learn how to update this unit so networking is available and I can access all of the advanced features.

Is there an image available, or is there a better way of doing this? I would like to keep the original drive intact as a backup and then do all my experimenting on the new drive.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Read my signature. I recommend you sell the R10 on eBay and get a second Samsung unit (4040R/4080R/4120R). All of the Samsung units use the same InstantCake image. A "bonus" with the Samsungs is that you don't need Torx screwdrivers.

Make sure you read the "sticky" at the top of this forum.
