Espanyol Finishes The Task And Returns To First In Zaragoza

4 min read

The Espanyol took advantage of his first match in Zaragoza and it’s First Division team (0-0). The offense suffered last year, in which he was in 37 of the 38 days in a decline that took place on July 8, is now history.

Exactly ten months later, the catastrophe has given way to happiness. The blue and white team returns to the top flight, the place where it should never have left. One point in La Romareda was enough for him and he got it. Mission accomplished.

The blue and white team did not want to delay the goal. The sentence is over. From July 8, 2020 to May 8, 2021. That has been a period of extremely harsh torture for a club with 30,000 members. As in the previous declines, the Catalan bloc has only spent one year in hell. It also went up to the first in 1963, 1970, 1990 and 1994. The 2021 expands a collection that should not have more chapters.

High and release
“There was an account to settle and we have done it. It goes for our people, who are First Class,” Vicente Moreno proclaimed minutes after reaching the goal. “We have gone up because we have worked a lot , not because of the budget . The players have had a bad time. I have lived the whole journey. I also dedicate it to my family. I give them more displeasure than happiness,” added the architect of success.

Next year, First Division football will return to the brand new Cornellà stadium . Twenty-seven years after the last promotion, certified by Camacho’s team with a win in Sarrià against Cádiz, Espanyol once again enjoyed a high and a total release. In 1994 he got it three days from the end.

On this occasion, the joy comes earlier, with 12 points still at stake , which shows the excellent trajectory of a block that has not lost since January 31 against Rayo (2-3).

Triumphant streak
The parrots have chained 15 games without losing , but in that streak there was also room for doubt, with three consecutive draws that left the team out of direct promotion in March. That miraculous goal by Nico Melamed in Miranda de Ebro was the final turning point for a Espanyol that is ending the championship like a plane.

At the moment of truth, the team with the most talent and budget has imposed its virtues, driven by a coach who sealed his fourth promotion in seven years this Saturday (two with Mallorca , one with Nàstic and the one achieved with the Blue and Whites) . The merit of the Valencian is unquestionable.

Steps to the goal
Few teams like Zaragoza know the tragedy of settling in the Second Division. He has been there since 2013. A club with six King’s Cups, a Recopa and a UEFA Cup that now lives in the well, more eager not to fall to Second B than the dream of promotion.

“We have gone up because of our work, not because of having the highest budget. It goes for our people, who are First Class”

Vicente Moreno / Espanyol Coach
The debacle of last season served to reflect and do things with common sense. Espanyol has been adding steps towards the goal. The last one was missing. Not even the absence of top scorer Raúl de Tomás, isolated by covid, stopped the parakeet’s march in Zaragoza.

On a torrid 30-degree afternoon , the team once again showed its strength. Darder starred the first time and Dimata was close to reaching a ball in a play in which a penalty was claimed for hands.

Non-aggression pact
In the final stretch of the first half it was time for the goalkeepers. Zamora Diego López appeared to deflect a good shot from Adrián (m. 42) to corner and Cristian Álvarez, the ex-goalkeeper parakeet, magnified himself to avoid the free-kick from Embarba , as incisive as ever. The former Rayo player is a jewel, the top assistant in the championship (14 passes on goal).

The second part had no history. A shot by Eguaras touching the post and a last attempt by Puado repelled by the Argentine goalkeeper (m. 68). The rest was left over. The tie gave glory to Espanyol and put salvation on track. It was not necessary to complicate life and everyone came out happy with a non-aggression pact typical of lifelong football.

The parrots will not break the historical record of points of a Second Division champion that Depor has held since 2013, but they have what they most wanted. The promotion celebration began on the lawn of La Romareda and will continue this Sunday in moderation in Catalonia.
